Audi is about to thrust its new flagship A8 sedan upon the world but UK magazine Autocar has already had a chance to sample one. At launch, the all-wheel-drive sedan will have three engine options: a pair of 4.2-liter V8s in gas and diesel flavors and a 3.0-liter TDI diesel V6. The 3.0-liter is a familiar configuration for Audi, but the unit in the A8 has apparently been re-engineered. With 250 horsepower, it provides ample performance for the big sedan.
The A8 also gets automatic start-stop capability with its eight-speed automatic transmission and brake energy recuperation. Bringing all this technology together, the magazine author saw 36 miles per gallon (U.S.) in combined driving with the TDI engine. This is over 43mppg running B20. We don’t know if Audi will include the diesel when the A8 crosses the Atlantic later this year, but we certainly hope so.
