Alameda, California-based Aurora Biofuels, Inc. indicates it has completed an 18-month test run of its algae biodiesel pilot plant in Florida. The biodiesel produced has successfully passed ASTM standards, with the consistency of fuel production over the trial period marking a success in perfecting the company's low-cost open seawater pond algae production systems. "Our results prove that large-scale outdoor production of biodiesel from microalgae is entirely within our reach, and that our technology can be optimized and is ready to scale," said Aurora Biofuels Chief Executive Bob Walsh. The company anticipates the construction of a 50-acre demonstration facility with commercial operations by 2012. (Source: Clean Tech Brief, March 6, 2009)
