Volvo has decided to cancel plans to produce a diesel hybrid in favor of bringing a series of PHEV powered by a diesel engine to market just one year later in 2012. The PHEV will boast an all-electric range of 31 miles — enough to cover the needs of 75% of Europeans. After that, a fuel-efficient diesel — capable of running on biodiesel — will kick in to give a 746-mile range. Carbon dioxide emissions will be an incredibly low 49 g/km of CO2, about half that of today’s top performers like the VW Polo BlueMotion. (Source: Volvo, September 26, 2009)
