The Government of Ontario has awarded $4.5 million CDN ($3.9 million US) to the University of Ottawa to support two research projects as part of the Ontario Research Fund Research Excellence program. One of the projects, APECS: Advancing Photovoltaics for Economical Concentrator Systems, aims to establish high-efficiency concentrating photovoltaic (CPV) systems as an economically viable technology for grid-connected solar power generation. The APECS research team has set an aggressive target of enabling $2/Watt concentrator system cost and $0.07/kW grid parity. The research is expected to develop highly qualified and skilled personnel at both college and university levels. (Source: Ottawa U, June 11, 2009)
