The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has adopted a regulation to capture methane from landfills throughout the state and require 14 uncontrolled municipal solid waste landfills to design and install new gas collection and control systems by 2012.

In addition, the regulation will require landfills with existing control systems to minimize methane emissions. CARB estimates that 218 of the state’s overall 367 municipal solid waste landfills with the potential to generate methane emissions may be subject to the regulation. (Source: CARB, June 25, 2009)
