GM opened a 33,000-square foot, $25 million battery plant — possibly the largest battery lab in the US — which will test the company’s next-generation drivetrains, including the Volt’s underpinnings. The Global Battery Systems Lab is located on GM’s extensive Warren Technical Center outside Detroit, and features state-of-the-art testing facilities, including 160 test channels, 42 thermal chambers, and 32 battery cyclers.
